At the end of May, the wind and solar park project developer wpd laid the foundation for further self-developed solar parks in Taiwan with a total capacity of 2.2 megawatts. The turnkey construction and commissioning will be completed by mid-August. The projects will be built in the Yunlin and Changhua regions which are located in the mid-west of the island. In the projects, wpd will incorporate modules from Canadian Solar and Delta inverters which are produced in Taiwan, thereby securing six-percent higher reward over 20 years.

„With the construction of the Taiwanese solar projects, we are purposefully pursuing our path towards expanding our business areas,“ says Niclas Fritsch, Managing Director of wpd Solar GmbH. „Since 2017, we have reintroduced this field into our portfolio and have since then developed a big pipeline in Asia, Europe and North America. In Taiwan alone, in addition to the previously successfully implemented 6.6 megawatts, projects with a total capacity of 140 megawatts will be realized in the upcoming years.“

The consolidated structures, the global network in the field of the renewable industry and the knowledge of individual markets which wpd has gained through decades of work in the wind sector, are of considerable help. The company has offices in 17 countries, so a local Taiwanese team is also developing the solar projects: „Taiwan is one of wpd’s most important solar markets in Asia,“ says Tommy Yeh, who leads the Taiwan solar team. „That’s why it’s not only important for us to have our own local office here, but also to boost local value creation.“

In 2016, the Taiwanese government determined the target of 20 gigawatts of electricity generated by solar energy by 2025. So far, this Asian country generates only 1 gigawatt with the help of the sun.
